Creamy Dreamy Scalloped Potatoes, A Classic Side Dish

A classic side dish perfect for crispy fried fish, or served aside slow roasted, grilled and smoked meats.

To prepare Creamy Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes you will need:

  • 3/4 Lb Petite Golden Potatoes, sliced thin
  • 2 large yellow onions, sliced thin into rings
  • 1/2 stick unsalted butter, divided into 5 portions
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp fresh grated nutmeg
  • 1 Tbsp Kosher Salt
  • 2 tsp ground white pepper
  • 3 cups fresh grated extra sharp cheddar cheese

Make Creamy Dreamy Scalloped Potatoes

Preheat oven to 375° F.  Grease a 9 X 9 baking dish with a small amount of butter and pat the sliced potatoes dry with paper towels.

Place 1/2 of the potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish as a flat layer, then a flat layer of 1/2 the sliced onions.

Repeat with another layer of sliced potatoes and a final layer of sliced onions.  Place one portion of butter, on top of the onions, near each corner and one portion in the center.

Whisk the cream, flour, nutmeg, salt and pepper until smooth then pour over the potatoes and onions.  Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour.

Remove scalloped potatoes from the oven and sprinkle on a layer of shredded cheddar cheese.  Bake uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes until the cheese is just melted and starting to brown.

(Servings= 8-10, Prep Time= 15 mins, Cook Time= 1 hour 20 mins)

I’ve been fiddling with this recipe for about 20 years now to get it right, never straying too far from how mom makes her scalloped potatoes.
