‘Handstand Kids’ Cookbook Series

Helps Children Travel the World

One Recipe at a Time

The ‘Handstand Kids’ Cookbook series helps children travel the world one recipe at a time by exploring the taste, culture and language of Mexico and China.  These colorful, hardbound and illustrated books that are also creatively packaged.

The cookbooks allow kids to explore different tastes, cultures and languages, without leaving their home. The Chinese Cookbook offers recipes like:  The Great Wall of Chicken Lettuce Wraps while learning about the Great Wall of China; Kung Pow! (Kung Pao Tofu), showing the characters doing karate; and Chow Mein Long Life Noodles.  Emmy award winner and host of Simply Ming, Chef Ming Tsai, wrote the foreword to the cookbook.

The Handstand Kids Chinese Cookbook kit is packaged in a takeout box with a pair of child-friendly chopsticks.  This is a terrific way to introduce children to new languages and cultures in a fun and delicious way.

The Handstand Kids Mexican Cookbook is the second book in the increasingly popular Handstand Kids cookbook series (the first featured the recipes and language of Italy).  An esteemed expert on Mexican cooking and co-host of The Food Network’s Melting Pot, Chef Aarón Sanchez, wrote the introduction to the cookbook.  The Handstand Kid characters use their cooking skills in the book to create a food fundraiser for Common Threads, a non-profit organization founded by Oprah’s personal chef, Art Smith.

The Handstand Kids Mexican Cookbook comes in a tortilla bag with an oven mitt.  All of the ingredients and utensils are translated into Spanish, so kid chefs can learn the language as they cook.

The Handstand Kids have diverse interests and backgrounds: Felix is a vegetarian, Izzy loves to cook for his diabetic sister, Ari uses her cooking skills to volunteer at kid’s charities, Gabby speaks Spanish and English, and Marvin is an aspiring executive chef.

Each of the five Handstand Kids characters, developed throughout the series, has diverse interests and backgrounds that allow them to relate to all children: Felix is a vegetarian; Izzy loves to cook for his diabetic sister; Ari uses her cooking skills to volunteer at kid’s charities; Gabby is bilingual, speaking both Spanish and English; and Marvin is an aspiring chef.

“The goal of the Handstand Kids Cookbook series is to create a global community of children. The series not only introduces kids to recipes from around the word, but encourages them to use their new skills to get involved in their community,” said Yvette Garfield, author and founder of the Handstand Kids Cookbook Company. “Each book exposes children to a different charity and shows them how they can use their new cooking abilities to help others.

Yvette Garfield, a law school graduate with a background in international children’s rights, founded the Handstand Kids Cookbook Company. She has worked with various non-profit organizations and the Department of Justice, Children’s Rights Section.
