Flavorwood Bar-B-Q Grilling Smoke can be used to add smoky flavor to just about anything that can be cooked on the grill, even apple pie…

It’s beautiful this time of year in NW Illinois, and I’m excited to get outside and do some bbq grilling.
What better way to kick off grilling season than by making Grilled Applewood Smoked Apple Pie!

First I preheated my bbq grill to 400 °F by igniting the right side burners on high while keeping the left side burners turned off.
Next I placed an Apple Flavorwood Bar-B-Q Grilling Smoke can on the hot side of the grill to heat it up to smoking temperature.
While the grill and Flavorwood preheated, I assembled the apple pie. Starting with peeling, coring, and slicing Granny Smith apples.

After mixing up brown sugar with some apple pie spices, I tossed the apples in the sweet spiced mixture to create the pie filling.

Then I mixed some flour, sugar and butter for a Dutch crumb topping that was sprinkled liberally over the top of the apple pie filling.

I placed the apple pie in another pan and used a pie crust ring to cover the outer crust. This kept the pie crust from burning in the hot grill.

I grilled the apple pie on the left side of the grill (which was not lit) for about an hour, rotating it once to ensure even cooking. For the last 10 minutes of grilling, I removed the pie crust ring so that the crust could finish browning.
This indirect cooking method allowed the pie to bake at a consistent temperature without burning while the Flavorwood Bar-B-Q Griling Smoke permeated it with applewood smoke.

The Flavorwood Bar-B-Q Grilling smoke lent a subtle smoky flavor to the pie which had a wonderful smoked caramel and apple flavor.
This smoked apple pie sure was tasty. The best part was that there was no messy clean up like traditional wood chips.
